The Story

Meet the man who jacked The Mona Lisa and made her a household name!

1911. The swipe. Vincenzo Peruggia—an Italian handyman with big patriotic feelings—walks into the Louvre like it’s just another workday… and walks out with the Mona Lisa under his coat.

The world panics (and Mona levels up). Headlines explode. Crowds show up just to stare at the empty space on the wall. Overnight, Mona goes from “famous painting” to global obsession.


Two years in hiding. While everyone’s searching, Vincenzo keeps her tucked away, convinced he’s about to be remembered as a hero who “brought her home.”


1913. The bust. He tries to sell her in Florence. The dealer calls the authorities. Vincenzo gets caught, Mona gets recovered, and the legend is sealed forever.
